Dr. Jeff Oppenheimer Creates Neurosurgery Awareness
As a board certified surgeon and as a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Jeff Oppenheimer presented a statement of purpose of neurosurgery. He stated that Neurological Surgery is a discipline of medicine and that specialty of surgery that provides operative and non-operative management of disorders of the central, peripheral, and automatic nervous systems, including their supporting systems and vascular supply. It also includes the evaluation of treatment of the pathological processes which modify the function or activity of the nervous system, and the operative and non-operative management of pain. Neurosurgery encompasses treatment of adult patients with disorders of the nervous system, disorders of the brain, meninges and the skull, and their blood supply. It also treats different disorders including those of the pituitary gland, spinal cord, meninges and vertebral column, cranial and spinal nerves, and including those which may require treatment by spinal fusion or instrumentation. Because of the rampant neurological disorders including brain tumor, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, etc. that affect the majority of the population, medical students should be encouraged to shift to this field of specialty.
